Here's where I've landed on the new Google Ad for Black History Month: It's the best thing you've ever already seen.
Here’s the thing. You’ve already seen every image in Google’s new commercial celebrating Black History Month. You’ve just never seen it all presented quite like this. I’m reminded of a scene from Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing when Mookie asks Pino, “Who is your favorite rock star?”
The soundscape and the editing are magical. It’s a stirring collection of achievements and milestones. None of it was gathered based on Google’s opinion of what should go into the tribute. It’s simply data. We made this. YOU made this. All of us. With our Google searches. Google simply holds up a mirror. It is eye-opening. It is surprising in its sheer volume. And it is impossible to think of a more spectacular way to observe Black History Month.
